Hull Shape Optimization

Get the best hull shape — fast, cost-efficient, and developed in close collaboration.

Our in-house optimization framework is the result of a close collaboration between former colleagues from the aerospace and marine sectors, combining complementary expertise:

  • Marine CFD experience, ensuring the simulations and constraints match real-world design needs
  • Geometry deformation expertise, with no requirement for fully parametric CAD
  • Aerospace optimization methods, offering advanced algorithms and sampling strategies

Together, this collaboration has driven more than 1500 hours of development starting in 2024 and resulting today in a powerful, scalable tool built on open-source libraries — allowing us to deliver high-quality optimization work at a competitive cost.

All simulations are run in full-scale RANS CFD, with robust settings and automation routines refined over years of simulation work. Optimizations can typically run across a weekend, with each iteration taking 20-45 minutes on our in-house HPC infrastructure.

What Sets Our Tool Apart

  • Handles complex geometries involving 40+ parameters without exponential cost, thanks to smart aerospace-inspired algorithms
  • Multi-objective capable optimization (incl. different speeds, draughts and trims) with focus on power reduction in calm water transit
  • Advanced deformation techniques, developed in-house, with no need for parametric 3D modelling of the hull
  • Flexible constraints system — from displacement, KM, and LCB to tunnel length, propeller clearance, tank intersections, angles, etc.
  • Includes propulsion system modelling (via actuator disk theory), identifying shapes that improve wake quality and propulsion efficiency
  • The final result is a clean, pre-faired 3D hull model, ready for integration into your design workflow

Courtesey of Breeze Ship Design

Throughout the optimization process, we work closely with you — providing multiple candidate hulls along the way and ensuring project direction can evolve as constraints and priorities become clearer. This flexibility allows for design steering, even when requirements are difficult to express up front.

Whether you're refining an existing hull or exploring a new design space, we offer a reliable and cost-effective way to navigate complex design trade-offs — with high confidence in the results.

Ship Hydrodynamics & Performance

Efficient and reliable CFD simulations — backed by deep expertise, validations, automation, and scalable computing power.

At NOCEAN, we offer over 15 years of experience in ship hydrodynamics and aerodynamics, combining technical depth with fast, consistent delivery.

With a background that includes 5 years in the Hydrodynamics Department at Ulstein Design & Solutions and 4 years in the software development industry, we approach each project with both industry insight and practical know-how.

Our methods are rooted in data. Over the years, we've benchmarked our simulations against more than 300 model tests and 30 full-scale sea trials, building a robust foundation for accuracy and confidence in our results.

We rely heavily on automation — from geometry handling to post-processing — to ensure consistency and reduce turnaround time. This allows us to focus more on engineering insight while keeping lead times short.

As a small and agile company, we operate with a low-cost structure, making us a very competitive partner for a wide range of hydrodynamic studies — whether you're a shipyard, design house, or research group.

And above all, every team member at NOCEAN is driven by a deep passion for the ocean — a shared commitment that fuels both the quality of our work and the care we bring to each project.

Our simulations are powered by several hundred cores of high-performance computing resources, and we use state-of-the-art CFD tools to ensure high fidelity without compromising delivery speed.

From early design evaluations to advanced performance studies, we offer a scalable and responsive CFD service that helps you move forward with confidence.

Marine and Offshore Innovation

Smart use of CFD to improve offshore components — whether for performance, stability, or deployment accuracy.

Courtsey of Shipshave

At NOCEAN, we bring hydrodynamics and engineering expertise to a wide range of offshore and marine equipment design tasks.
From improving deployment behaviour to reducing drag or fine-tuning flow interactions, many challenges that were once trial-and-error can now be addressed early through simulations.

One example is our collaboration with Allton on the development of a free-falling seismic node carrier, which resurfaces on demand.
In 4D seismic surveys, precise node positioning is crucial.
NOCEAN was brought in to improve the landing accuracy — without introducing complexity or significant added cost.

Through multiple CFD-based design iterations, we explored several variants while respecting patent constraints.

The final design, currently under construction, was validated at sea by comparing its behaviour to the original version.

The result: a near-zero drift during free fall, and improved overall reliability of the deployment process.

This simulation-driven approach allowed us to avoid costly prototyping and trial-and-error, significantly reducing time and expenses. Final performance was confirmed through a single, low-cost test — a lean process delivering confidence without the usual overhead.

Whether you’re developing a new subsea product, investigating flow-induced behaviour, or simply aiming for a more predictable and efficient system — NOCEAN simulations can reveal trends, eliminate guesswork, and guide better design choices early on.

Other CFD Applications in Marine and Offshore:

  • Concept design (incl. 3D work)
  • Deployment studies for subsea equipment (e.g. ROVs, AUVs, sensors, carriers)
  • Wake interaction and drag reduction on submerged structures
  • Mooring line and riser flow interaction analysis
  • Flow shielding and turbulence management near critical equipment
  • Inlet/outlet design for moonpools, sea chests, or intakes
  • Flow management for enclosed or submerged systems
  • Stability and flow-induced movement analysis of floating structures
  • Debris path prediction and impact risk on subsea installations
  • Motion-induced flow in tanks or confined spaces (e.g. ballast or process tanks)
  • Free-surface and sloshing effects during transport or launch operations

Aquaculture Systems

Achieve better RAS systems with CFD-driven design — higher flow, uniform oxygen distribution, lower mortality, and reduced power consumption.

NOCEAN brings CFD-driven insight to land-based aquaculture, with a focus on optimizing Recirculating Aquaculture Systems (RAS) across Europe.

We've successfully supported multiple inland fish farm projects, helping clients reduce risk, improve biological outcomes, and make confident design decisions well before construction begins.

From aerators and diffusers to pump placement and piping layout, every component in a RAS loop influences flow uniformity and oxygen levels — two of the most critical parameters for fish welfare and operational success.

Our simulations capture subtle differences and performance trends that are difficult, if not impossible, to detect by rule-of-thumb or trial-and-error.

Why CFD for Aquaculture?

  • Optimize flow speed across the entire volume to ensure fish remain active and develop muscle mass
  • Achieve uniform oxygen distribution and prevent local stagnation zones that increase mortality risk
  • Balance energy efficiency with biological performance, minimizing over-dimensioning of pumps and aerators
  • Validate configurations before construction, avoiding costly design revisions and helping secure investor and client confidence
  • Support for practical constraints — NOCEAN always works within real-world limits of space, budget, and constructability

Proven Experience

NOCEAN has contributed to the design and optimization of several inland fish farming systems across Europe — each tailored to its species, flow capacity, and facility layout.

Our CFD tools and workflows allow for fast iteration and intuitive comparison of alternatives, ensuring that the final design is not just good enough — but truly optimal.

Whether you’re designing a new facility or improving an existing system, our simulation-based approach gives you the clarity and control needed to deliver performance that pays off — biologically and economically.
